DSD file created by Gus Skinas from the original DSD audio used to create the existing SACD.

"I listened to the DSD files available from SHR and was astonished by the resolution. From the carefully tuned drum fills, the spotless piano accents, and the layered vocal harmonies, nearly every song is a clinic in the art of engineering a hit record. Had I not known any better, I would have sworn I was listening to mastertapes. Pop nostalgia at its best." — Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, March 2015.

basically this is a copy of a 5.1 converted to stereo. But the quality is not that good. the track: Close to you highlight the problem: there is only sound from left channel in the beginning then only right (the intro part of the song)

Impressive. Most impressive.

I've always thought that hi-rez music would be limited by the limitations of the source material. Not so here, despite some of these tracks being nearly 50-years old. Delineation of instruments was simply amazing throughout, and Karen's vocals are never overly bright. If anything, the overall clarity underscores how criminal the overproduction of later productions were, practically burying Karen's amazing voice with unnecessary reverb.

This was my first DSD purchase after numerous FLAC downloads, and it's sold me on DSD superiority. Not even my SACD of The Singles sounds this good.

This was my first foray into DSD.

I've always liked the Carpenters so I went with what most customers said: A must have.

The recording is stellar. Karen's voice is truly a testament to just how talented she was. I don't own an audiophile stereo but I can appreciate how clean and warm this recording is.

It's a shame more artists have yet to release their catalog on DSD. It's the only format I will consider buying after being sadly disappointed by the sub par quality of most vinyl lp's .

Must have for the carpenters fan

This was my second DSD purchase from Acoustic Sounds. My first was the Mighty Sam McClain title, which sounds great with great music, too. But throughout this recording, Karen's sublime voice sometimes has a bright, thin, brittle edge that really detracts from the listening experience. This is especially true on my favorite tune, "Goodbye To Love." Maybe it's just me, because I'm particularly sensitive to sibilance on recordings, or maybe the other reviewer who mentioned that these tracks have been tinkered with by Richard over the years has hit the nail on the head. Kind of a letdown and not what I expected from DSD.

Fine, if you like revisionist remixes...

The sound on this release is a mixed bag. The TAS review exclaims: " ...I would have sworn I was listening to mastertapes.". Sure, masters that were loaded into Pro Tools and remixed at 24/96. The real issue here is that parts of the recording are from the original sessions. Yet Richard Carpenter has not only remixed these over the years, his meddling also has re-recorded instrumental parts. If these sound "off" from the original records, this is why. What bothers me is that the original analog recordings sound fine, yet the new parts were digitally recorded and sound awkward in comparison (too fresh/clean). Want authentic? Original vinyl, or the Remastered Classic CDs. Untampered with. Want to know what's been remixed/re-recorded? Search for Carpenters Recording Resource. If you can live with the tampering, fine. I admit the surround mix of this is a cool listen but I realize it's inauthentic and still prefer the original albums. Buyer beware.

Love it

I was anti Carpenters growing up like I was anti Disco. This was one of my first DSD purchases. I listen to it so much and cant help but turn the volume up because Karens voice is so special. I agree Karen was one of the premier vocalist of her time. This DSD recording is sublime and considering when it was recorded it is even more amazing.

I'm a great fan of the Carpenters and have their albums in CD, XRCD, K2-HD and of course Vinyl. But this DSD beats them all!

I've never heard Karen sound so clear, so uncompressed and so emotional. I swear I could hear a lot of sonics I've never heard before in all the other media.

The last track especially totally blew me away. It was so clear that it's almost like a modern recording. It's hard to believe these were recorded 34-56 years ago!

A great buy! Please have more of such music in DSD.

Absolutely incredible

I have always loved this music, all the back to the 1970s. The recording on DSD is amazing. It's as if Karen Carpenter is in the same room! 5 stars! It's worth every penny.

as her brother has often said.... my sister is the finest vocalist of our time..and he is quite correct..! , however until her material was available in dsd previous format was capable of properly "presenting that voice".as it really sounds. thank god for acoustic sounds and the dsd format they sell/provide for our listening pleasure

Spectacular vocals on DSD

Karen's vocal are simply perfect - she really sounds like she's in the room, except positioned several feet above straight-on sight. I honestly can't remember a time when I've heard more fluid vocals. Her voice on this album is so velvety smooth and refined that I can't possibly do it justice in this review. Once you've heard Karen's vocals in DSD, you'll never listen to anything else again, save vinyl. I don't remember the price of the DSD download but, whatever is was, I got a bargain.

All the soft hits are on this album, but there is also at least one song that veers off into a very room-filling jazzy song. But the albums is almost all soft-very soft-rock.

Karen's vocal are simply spectacular. I don't particularly go in for these light romantic songs, but her voice is simply too good and perfectly recorded that, combined, make this a very addictive album. This is one of those albums you'd give a 6 to, if you could somehow make a special exception for certain album

Once again I have heard a big difference between the DSD and the lower resolution (in this case24/96 FLAC) file. As usual the DSD file sounds louder, but there is MUCH more detail and vocal presence there! Karen's vocals just sound more real with the DSD. LOVE the Carpenters and when I saw this download was available I literally gasped and said I HAVE TO GET THIS ONE AGAIN!!
