Weather Report's 1971 debut

Mastered at 45 RPM from original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman

Double LP pressed at Pallas in Germany

"One of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group. Five Stars." —

"Jazz Album of the Year." — Downbeat readers poll

Here we have the free-floating, abstract beginnings of Weather Report, which would define the state of the electronic jazz/rock art from its first note almost to its last. Their first album is a direct extension of the Miles Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew period, more fluid in sound and more volatile in interplay. All Music calls it one of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group. Weather Report is getting new life with this incredible pressing. Mastered from original tapes at 45 RPM, pressed on two 180-gram audiophile-grade LPs, and housed in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket.

The best this album can be?

There is no question, this is a classic album worth owning. The pressing quality is exceptional, as one would expect for fifty bucks. There's detail in spades. Percussion instruments jump out of your speakers. To nit pick a little, what's missing is the "you are there" feeling. Instruments don't quite sound natural enough to convince you that the musicians are in the room with you. There's not much of a center image between the speakers, and the recording could use some warmth. That said, those qualities are probably on the original tapes. Despite some minor quibbles, this one will spend a lot of time on my table. The music and resolution are fantastic.
