"Perhaps THE solo piano record to have by Monk." 4 1/2 stars,

Monk's 1946 solo affair ranks among the pioneering pianist's most introspective, cerebral, and emotional outings. His trademark angularity informs a majority of the pieces, yet so does grand classicism and melodic rapture. Monk's readings of the originals and standards practically stand the tunes on their collective ears. Solo Monk is simply amazing. And now, mastered from the original master tapes, this 180-gram LP brings all the music closer, and into more transparent form, than ever before.

Anyone who hasn't heard the recordings on this will be very surprised; it's a departure for Monk more "standard" jazz, but still amazing to listen to. Quality is decent on my copy, a bit of surface noise even after running a brush to get the dust out. I'll attribute this to needing to clean it better; but even if cleaned there are some clicks and ticks you can hear on high notes or loud accented notes. That's the only thing keeping me from 5.
