Mark Knopfler - Privateering

Double LP

Privateering is the eighth studio album from former Dire Straits guitarist and frontman Mark Knopfler. The follow-up to his successful 2009 album Get Lucky, it was co-produced with regular collaborator Guy Fletcher.

Rolling Stone's review states: "'Redbud Tree,' a highlight of Mark Knopfler's eighth solo album, could've been written 100 years ago. But given our ecocrisis, this tree-hugging folk gem, embossed with a shimmering fingerpicked Strat, feels cannily modern. Knopfler's sueded voice has changed little since his 1980s heyday, and his elegant electric-guitar work sounds better than ever. The 20 songs, most top-shelf, are a textbook of folk styles, from Irish ballads ("Kingdom of Gold") and country-flavored weepers ("Seattle") to slide-driven blues ("Don't Forget Your Hat") and Tin Pan Alley nostalgia ("Radio City Serenade"). On the title track, he shows off his acoustic playing, a folk-rock vet returning to the source."

Though this was recorded in a very different way, more intament than the arena sounds of BIA's, it really reaches out. Well, to me anyway. The pressing is excellent and quiet. The sound reproduction is well placed and somewhat muted here and there. This LP will not get you up off your seat. Rather, it will settle you back into it. It will cover you like a warm blanket and urge you to have another glass of wine. It's a very sophisticated presentation.

All wheels rollin' posted on 01/31/2013 4 Stars Reviewer: Jeff C - Australia The van on the cover may have lost a wheel but the music trucks along the highway with all tyres getting the traction on the road. This album is sonically very satisfying and the vinyl is nicely pressed and pretty quiet. The style of the music is kind of laid back but also has grunt so it stands up nicely to repeated plays. Mark has surrounded himself with some fine musicians and the tunes include a fusion of traditional folk, blues rock and highway rockers. The only other Knopfler solo album I have is the 2004 Shangri-La which I rather like and just like that album this one is also meticulously crafted.
