Santana - Caravanserai

 (Import)

To attempt to categorize Carlos Santana's music is, for the prophets of rock music, rather like dancing on the edge of a volcano. While the New York Times acclaimed the band as a reincarnation of Dizzy Gillespie's Cuban-jazz big band from the end of the Forties, Rolling Stone spoke of a "methadrine trip without visions." Organ-player Gregg Rolie offered a very simple explanation of the origins of the highly differentiated sound coloring and the throb and chirp of the Afro-Cuban polyrhythms: he succinctly remarked that each member of the multi-cultural band "just played the music which he had grown up with." Just how thrilling this sounds is already evident from the first number on the disc, with its sounds of nature, twisted rhythms and little snatches of melody, which – as in several other titles – remains spellbinding even without the fascinating drive of Santana's lead sound. Of course there is plenty of solo material on the guitar which manifests itself in exuberant improvisations with a fusion of rock, salsa and jazz elements.

To much noise from the beguining to the end both sides. It appears that the vinyl used for this one was of a very poor quality. I cleaned it with an Okki Nokki twice. Sound like if it was played 200 times and treated without mercy.

I bought this as one of my first back-to-vinyl purchases. I have been listening to some version since it came out and have always been mesmeized by this album. This is what vinyl should do - cause you to listen and hear for the first time why you thought something was great. I heard details I have not heard in 35 years of listening. This is a beautifully produced record, every instrument has its voice, the stereo separation is amazing, I was nearly speechless listening to it. This record made my new system worth every penny. Absolutely flawless.

Excellent, flawless pressing. Actually, I didn't expect it. I would compare it to the best MoFi Japanese releases. The sound is clear and opened. The album is not my favorite at all, but I do like that I ordered it from Acoustic Sounds.

A totally faultless pressing, as usual from Speakers Corner. Sound slightly more open than the original (US) pressing. Recommemded.
