The reissue of the 1975 Shuggie Otis album Inspiration Information last year caused a storm, one of the greatest albums and careers that time forgot. A soul album tinged with jazz and off-kilter funk, its DIY approach and lo-fi electronics predicted much of what would follow at the end of the 20th Century. The album was recorded at sessions during the period of 1972-1974. Before, during and after this period Shuggie Otis continued to work as a session musician party for his father's (Johnny Otis) ongoing productions at his own Hawk Sound Studios, where much of Information Inspiration was recorded. This record, In Session Information, is the best of the sessions Shuggie recorded around the same period in the same studio and with many of the same sidemen. The specific project Johnny Otis had embarked upon was to record some of the pioneers of R&B in a modern context for release on the Blues Spectrum label series. Shuggie was used as session guitarist, pianist, arranger and writer.

I never knew this album existing and since I have everything Shuggie has done, and even some obscure titles with his dad, I had to have it. What a surprise. Great playing, songs and vocals. Sound is good, but it is all about the soul and the feel here. Excellent packaging and liner notes about the artists. Very well done and worthy. It further illustrates what a real talent this guy is - very different from his solo LPs, but has that signature guitar sound.
