This album continues to grow on me. At this point I'm telling everyone I know about it, and plan to buy copies on CD to give away to friends. It's that good!

My vinyl copy is apparently not as noisy as the previous reviewer's, however my side 2 is also a bit off-center, and there is a significant amount of noise at the end of side 1 just at the point where the music fades. I haven't heard the CD yet; the LP is warm and inviting to my ears. I copied it to MD to listen in the car and it sounds great.

Amazing Music, Poor Pressing

I love the Decemberists and their music! This release is simply a must-have! Caveat Emptor: Don't buy this on vinyl! The LP sounds rather withdrawn (on a $4,000 pair of Focal-JM Labs and a Music Hall) and heartless. Even though this was pressed on two LP's, the playing time is too long. Especially now that they are with a major label, they could afford to do a three or four disc set, which is what this music deserves. The vinyl is not 180g or even close and is quite noisy. My copy has serious ticks all the way through "The Island" and there is some serious wow on disc 2. There are no extras, liner notes or anything! UGGHH! Long story short, buy the CD!
