Hans Maria Kneihs studied violoncello, recorder and piano at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts; a musicology degree at the university remains incomplete. From 1964 to 1969, he was a cellist with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he left to be able to devote himself fully to playing and teaching the recorder. As a recorder soloist, Kneihs has given performances in concert, on radio and on television. With the Vienna Recorder Ensemble, which he founded and led from 1972 until it disbanded in 1985, he played countless concerts all over the world.
