Originally released in 1973, Moontan is the album that gained Golden Earring an enormous amount of international popularity, primarily on the strength of the hit single and enduring radio favourite “Radar Love”. To this day, their ninth album Moontan is their most successful album internationally — being the only Golden Earring album to be certified gold by the RIAA — and paved the way for these Dutch rockers in the U.S. “Radar Love” reached No. 13 on the Billboard Single Charts and has been covered more than 500 times since, including by U2, R.E.M. and Def Leppard.

Around the time of the album release, Golden Earring toured the States with opening acts that would become huge rock bands only a few years later (Aerosmith, KISS). They also shared stages with Led Zeppelin and The Who among others.

This is a new remastered and expanded 2LP edition from the first-generation master tapes of Moontan, overseen by Red Bullet catalog and band archivist Wouter Bessels. This version features three previously unreleased mixes and four bonus tracks. It is available as a limited edition of 5,000 individually numbered copies on crystal clear vinyl and includes an 8-page booklet with a new essay, memorabilia, and photos.

Awesome sound but low volume

The record appears to be made with lower than normal volume levels. Because of that, I had to turn up the volume and that exposed the record's surface noise. Overall, the vinyl is pretty quiet - like the new Classic Reissue Series from Blue Note.

Take any version of this album and apply a sharpening filter to it, and that's the album you get here. The splashy cymbals have been tamed, but a bit too much, so some of the cymbal sound seems removed. It's true that the cymbal strikes were overbearing in previous versions, but the masterer was a little too agressive in taming those strikes.

The sound is excellent except for the missing music (only the cymbals are affected). If not for that and the low volume level, this would easily be a 5 star album. It really is a significant improvement on previous versions.

The second record is worthless except for Big Tree, Blue Sea.
