Time Outtakes by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Label run by Dave Brubeck's family celebrates his centennial with new release!
Previously unreleased takes from the original 1959 Time Out sessions!
"While researching books written to celebrate jazz legend Dave Brubeck's centennial, a fascinating discovery was made; there were brilliant alternate takes for most of the tunes released on Time Out, the first jazz LP to sell over a million copies... These newly discovered recordings feature wonderful performances that are every bit as compelling as their famous counterparts!" — Chris Brubeck
"After all these years, and admittedly with a good measure of nostalgia, to hear those Time Out tracks ‘disrupted' by 'new' improvisations and detail sends an involuntary tingle down the spine. ..particularly for fans, this turning back of the clock to the 1959 studio — with interesting CD-booklet insights from the family, both on the pieces and the players' characters — feels pretty special." — Adrian Pallant, AP Reviews
We've all heard Dave Brubeck's Time Out — but never quite like this. You'll hear Brubeck Quartet's signature piece afresh and anew. Listening to this album will make you rediscover why you fell in love with The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright.
Once the Dave Brubeck Quartet released Time Out in 1959, the world jazz was never the same, writes Douglas Brinkley, CNN historian and Grammy-winning jazz producer. Every note of the seven original compositions soared with wild originality and trained musical genius. And "Take Five" became the best-selling jazz single of the 20th century.
Dave Brubeck (1920-2012), designated a "Living Legend" by The Library of Congress, was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. Brubeck's career spanned more than six decades, and his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.
Now the mysteries are solved with the historic release of Time Outtakes (alternative takes to the masterpiece that blew the hinges off the doors of jazz). Listeners have the high privilege of being able to be in the studio with the quartet as they innovate using 9/8, 5/4 and two bars of 3/4 alternating with two bars of 4/4 on such classics as "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Three to Get Ready." All listeners of Time Outtakes will experience the Cold War era jazz revolution as it unfolded. What joyous music for the ages!
