Named a Record To Die For on Stereophile's R2D4 list for 2018!
"Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese animator, manga artist, film producer, and cofounder of the legendary Studio Ghibli is undoubtedly one of the greatest animation legends of all time. The beauty of his work is a combination of the sheer scale of his worlds (on a par with the likes of Tolkien, Rowling, and Disney), the use of advanced animation beyond its time, and deeply beautiful stories that continue to warm the hearts of people of all ages — a rare feat for animated films to do on the scale that Miyazaki does it. Of course, this impact would not be possible without the work of Joe Hisaishi, who scores Miyazaki's movies. Hisaishi Meets Miyazaki Films is a compilation of epic orchestral hits from 'Princess Mononoke,' 'Spirited Away,' and 'Porco Rosso.'" Jana Dagdagan, R2D4 2018 for Stereophile, February 2018
This special collection highlights some of the most magical moments of Japanese anime, where composer Joe Hisaishi wrote music for Hayao Miyazaki's films "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds," "Porco Rosso," and critically acclaimed favorites "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away."
Milan has released both soundtracks to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, and the Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite. It makes perfect sense to reunite the two artists and four of their most cherished works under one disc. In fact, the symphonic poem from the cinematic masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds initiated the partnership between Miyazaki and Hisaishi. All of these recordings are products of Hisaishi himself, working at the piano specifically to make the pieces accessible for home listening.
Besides Hisaishi's piano work, the recordings feature The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nick Ingman and The New Philharmonic conducted by Kim Hong-Je.
