One of 2017's most successful and best-reviewed films, the American indie coming-of-age dramedy "Lady Bird," written and directed by Greta Gerwig, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 1 and was released theatrically in the US on November 3, 2017.
The film — starring Saoirse Ronan in the title role and Laurie Metcalf as her mother — has been topping many year-end best lists and is making waves in the 2018 awards season. "Lady Bird" just won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy while Saoirse Ronan took home the Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy award. The New York Film Critics Circle named "Lady Bird" 2017's Best Film and Ronan the year's Best Actress while the National Board of Review placed "Lady Bird" in the year's Top 10 Films, named Gerwig Best Director and Metcalf Best Supporting Actress. Ronan, Metcalf and "Lady Bird" are each nominated in top categories in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
"In Greta Gerwig's directorial debut and indie hit Lady Bird," wrote Tatiana Tenreyro in Billboard (11/21/2017), "the soundtrack plays a big role in showing protagonist Lady Bird's turbulent adolescent years. The film is set in 2002, and Gerwig wanted it to feel as authentic as possible with a soundtrack that transports viewers to the era. . . . "
It's an observation echoed by Winston Cook-Wilson in Spin (November 22, 2017) who wrote, "Director Greta Gerwig's playful use of pop music in 'Lady Bird,' her very popular and poignant comedy about a young high schooler's whirlwind of a senior year at a Sacramento private school, has been a cause for celebration among aging millennial fans who can relate to the song choice."
