Paavo Berglund (1929-2012) recorded the complete symphonies of his great compatriot Sibelius no fewer than three times.
Here we have Berglund conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with soloist Ida Haendel (violin) performing. Sibelius: 7 Symphonies, Spring Song, The Swan of Tuonela, Karelia Suite, Valse Triste, Serenades 1 & 2, Humoreske No. 5, Tapiola, Finlandia.
Berglund, a former music director of the Helsinki Philharmonic, was renowned internationally as a master interpreter of Sibelius's extraordinary music. In Gramophone's words, he conducted it "with an unhurried, controlled inevitability that allows the music to unfold in its own time without any loss of tension or excitement."
Sibelius was one of the 20th century's greatest and most innovative symphonists, reworking the traditional symphonic structure as radically as Beethoven did in his day. His music is characterised by beauty, mystery, color and light, together with his strong love for his native Finnish homeland.
