This 5 SACD Box Set contains five albums by Miles Davis: 'Round About Midnight, Milestones, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain, and Miles Smiles. Besides Davis, artists include John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Philly Joe Jones, Red Garland, Cannonball Adderley, and more.
The reissue of historical music masterpieces by Esoteric has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. These new audio versions feature Esoteric's proprietary re-mastering process to achieve the highest level of sound quality.
Esoteric's flag ship D/A converters, model D-01VU, Rubidium master clock generator model G-0Rb and Esoteric Mexcel interconnect cables and power cords, were all used for this re-mastering session. This combination of highly advanced technology greatly contributed to capturing the high quality sound of the original master.

'Round About Midnight
'Round About Midnight was the first recording with Davis's new quintet, composed of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Red Garland on piano, and a young John Coltrane on tenor sax. Featuring standards such as "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the title track "'Round Midnight," this album is considered by some to be one of the pinnacles of the hard bop era.

If anything, Milestones is as famous for its title track as the players that produced it. The launching pad for many of Davis' (and later, his contemporaries') improvisational flights, the singular piece invites the tessellated explorations Coltrane would forever chase as well as the headliner's argyle solo work, who broaches territories that far exceed what he had done with his bop-rooted past. Every song is a highlight, whether it's the bravado "No Jackle," featuring a hot-foot pace and bebop strains, or "Sid's Ahead," which continues the album's blues theme while tossing around edgy harmonics and inside-out structures.

Porgy And Bess
On their second conceptual album together, Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans offered up a profound reinterpretation of George Gershwin's famed opera Porgy and Bess. A landmark release in orchestral jazz and arguably the best of their many collaborations, Evans' adaptation of Gershwin's score here is a veritable tour de force and although the outing features strong performances from Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums), Davis' poignant trumpet playing is the unequivocal star. Transcendent material such as "Summertime" display the true beauty of Miles Davis and Gil Evans' collective genius, their ability to reach the listener on not only a musical level but an emotional one as well.

Sketches Of Spain
The most luxuriant and stridently romantic of all of Davis' recordings, Sketches of Spain pairs Davis with arranger and composer Gil Evans, with whom he had collaborated on several other projects, on a program of compositions largely derived from the Spanish folk tradition. Recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 - after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley had left the band - the album features performances by Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones.

Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis's discography for 1966 only lists the recordings made for the LP "Miles Smiles"! How strange when one considers the usual large output of Miles and his ensembles for Columbia Records in the Sixties. The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles's 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath's "Gingerbread Boy".
