Throughout the 1960s, soul singer William Bell and Stax label-mate Booker T. Jones forged a highly empathetic songwriting partnership that yielded a string of hits for Bell, as well as other artists at the legendary Memphis label. 1969's Bound to Happen was the last — and, in many ways, most brilliant — collaboration between the two. Jones produced and arranged the album, overdubbing many of the instruments himself, while the MGs and the Memphis Horns played backup. The album features "I Forgot to Be Your Lover," Bell's biggest hit for Stax.
