If you were an '80s teenager, the haunting and chilling voice of Aimee Mann on this album's title track was inescapable — it netted the quartet their only Top Ten hit on the Billboard singles chart, rising to No. 8 and remains the band's best-known song.
The combination of Mann and Robert Holmes' rhythm guitar set the stage for what might be called gothic pop music. There's a consistent dolorous sound throughout the album, highlighted by the three singles "Love In A Vaccum," "Looking Over My Shoulder," and "Voices Carry." The most mournful of 'til tuesday's three albums, all 11 songs on Voices Carry deal with the breakup of a relationship.
The "Voices Carry" video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and was played heavily on MTV. It depicts a boyfriend trying to convert Aimee Mann to his upper-class lifestyle; she finally lashes out at him during a concert at Carnegie Hall, standing up from her seat in the audience and belting the lyrics ("He said, shut up! He said, shut up! Oh God, can't you keep it down?...") as she removes her cap to reveal her signature spiky, rat-tailed hair.
