Live 1964 concert at Philharmonic Hall

Numbered, limited edition plus booklet

Hybrid Multichannel SACD includes new 5.0 Surround and original stereo mixes!

The sixth volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series is coming to 5.0 multichannel Hybrid SACD from Audio Fidelity in March. Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall was mixed into surround sound years ago by Sony, but the mix has sat on the shelf until now. It will arrive March 18 as newly remastered by Steve Hoffman (with a remastered stereo layer playable on all CD players).

First released in 2004, Bootleg Series Vol. 6 premiered Dylan's Halloween night concert from 1964 at New York's Philharmonic Hall (today known as David Geffen Hall) as originally recorded under the supervision of Columbia Records producer Tom Wilson. The 19-song solo acoustic show found Dylan emphasizing his topical "protest songs" as well as introducing three songs that would be included on 1965's Bringing It All Back Home: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" and "Gates of Eden." Dylan was joined by Joan Baez on striking performances of "Mama, You Been on My Mind," "It Ain't Me, Babe" and "With God on Her Side," and Baez also sang a solo rendition of the traditional ballad "Silver Dagger."

With the only known live version of "Spanish Harlem Incident," the premiere of "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" and powerful performances of all-time Dylan staples such as "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and "All I Really Want to Do," Bootleg Series Vol. 6 captures the 23-year old Dylan at the height of his powers as a troubadour, armed with just his voice, a guitar and a harmonica. Like the original Columbia/Legacy release, Audio Fidelity's SACD reissue includes a 56-page booklet with liner notes and rare photographs.

Concert is Trimmed/Censored

3 Stars
The Pros: Wonderful mastering is a significant improvement over the original Columbia release. Includes the surround mix - at long last!

The Cons: Some of the banter/discussion between Bob Dylan and the audience has been removed. To hear the complete performance, you will need the original Columbia release. Poor packaging quality compared to original Columbia release with reduced book size that leads to slipcase damage.

Main reason for 3 star rating is because complete performance is not included on these discs.
