Best From The West: Modern Sounds From California Vol. 2 is a very unique LP. First, it is one of the few Blue Note records featuring West Coast jazz musicians as the label's primary focus was decidedly on the East Coast jazz scene. Second, it is a part of a two-LP set which constituted a "blindfold test" for the record-buying public. There were no credits on the first volume, and the listener was supposed to guess who the musicians were before they were revealed on the second volume which was released later.
We can now safely say that both volumes feature wonderful original music by Shorty Rogers, Pete Rugolo, John Graas, Marty Paich and Buddy Collette, and prominent West Coast musicians including Lorraine Geller, Joe Mondragon, Conte Candoli, Charlie Mariano, and Stan Levey.
