"If there was any remaining doubt that Art Alexakis could still pen a song that wields the ability to make you smile in one moment, then in the next push you to the edge of tears, those worries can now be forgotten. Black Is The New Black ushers in the return of Everclear's wit and unabashed honesty regarding the often ugly side of reality." — Under The Gun Review, April 2015
Everclear frontman Art Alexakis had this to say about the group's new home on The End Records label and the new album Black Is The New Black — "We are really excited to be on The End Records. There is such a buzz of enthusiasm there for our new album, Black Is The New Black. It's an unapologetic rock record that I feel combines the best of classic Everclear with contemporary production and what I feel is some of my best songwriting in years!"
Bombastic, hard-driving, generation-spanning rock n' roll with instantly memorable, sharp-as-hell hooks propel Black Is The New Black. Muscular but melodic, this is the sound of a band driven and united by singular, intense purpose. At an average of three-minutes each, the songs rip forward with palpable swagger, supercharged by a mix of autobiographical exorcism and narrative storytelling, from the gut and throat of Everclear's singer, guitarist, co-founder and songwriter — Alexakis. Black Is The New Black is a diverse and timeless sounding collection, without ballads and without nostalgia. This is a heavy guitar record.
For more than two decades, Everclear's sound has reflected the rock, post-punk, and singer/songwriter influences of Alexakis, including acts like X, the Replacements, the Pixies, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello. The band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records, Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile, which were all certified platinum.
