Moodsville features tenor saxophonist Bennie Wallace leading a classic quartet of piano, bass, and drums. Although this is a multi-miked studio recording, Joe Harley and recording engineer Joe Marciano have done a credible job of creating a plausible soundstage. The recording has good dynamics and presence, and captures Wallace's big tenor sax tone. Recorded direct to 2-track at Systems 2 in New York in May the session features some of the hottest jazz musicians currently working in the US: Mulgrew Miller (piano), Peter Washington (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums).
The performances include "Love For Sale," "I Concentrate On You," "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing," "When A Woman Loves A Man," "April In Paris," "Milestones" and "Con Alma."
The sound and feel of the album is very close to that of the great Moodsville and Prestige recordings of the '50s and '60s featuring artists like Gene Ammons. This album is a tribute to those great recordings hence the title Moodsville. There are stunning versions of "April In Paris," "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing" and "When A Woman Loves A Man." This is the kind of beautiful, smoky, full bodied and ballad-filled tenor sax album that audiophiles just love!
There are many records and labels who declare themselves to be of "audiophile quality". Groove Note records all of their albums at the best studios in Hollywood (Oceanway, Record One, Cello, Sunset Sound) using a top Grammy nominated recording engineer, Michael C. Ross. All Groove Note albums are recorded 100% analogue and the production masters are also mixed by 100% analogue by MC Ross. All albums are cut by one of the greatest mastering engineers in the world, Bernie Grundman, on an all-analogue tube cutting system using all upgraded and modified vintage Sculley cutting lathes. All LPs plated and pressed by RTI on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.
