Recorded at Chess Records studio in Chicago, mecca for the Rolling Stones!

This is the band paying homage to the great Chicago bluesmen whose work they revered and who helped name the band, “Rollin’ Stone” is a Muddy Waters song. Ron Malo, the Chess engineer, contributed hugely to the sound of this record, it’s sonically very different from anything they had previously recorded and is a mixture of covers, including Chuck Berry’s “Around and Around”. Berry visited the band in the studio and tried to encourage them to record more of his compositions. The EP features two group compositions under the moniker Nanker Phelge, Phelge being the name of a friend of Brian Jones, and a Nanker was a revolting face he was fond of pulling. One of the band’s compositions, which features Ian Stewart on the organ, is “2120 South Michigan Avenue” the address of Chess studios.
