The name "Decca" dates back to a portable gramophone called the "Decca Dulcephone," patented in 1914 by musical instrument makers Barnett Samuel & Sons. The name "Decca" was coined by Wilfred S. Samuel, by merging the word "Mecca" with the initial "D" of both the "Dulcet" logo and their trademarked "Dulcephone." Barnett Samuel & Sons was eventually renamed The Decca Gramophone Company Ltd., prior to being sold to former stockbroker Edward Lewis in 1929.

During the 1930s, Decca promoted itself as "The Supreme Record Company." This claim was truly borne out when Decca began recording Full Frequency Range Recordings (FFRR) in 1944, subsequently graduating to Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound (FFSS) in 1958. A lengthy exchange of views surrounded the naming of this book. FIM finally managed to incorporate the essence of Decca's legacy - the Decca name, allusions to the company's supreme character, its pioneering work in Stereophonic recording - hence, this package became Decca: Supreme Stereophonic Legacy.
