"Game-Changer!" - The Absolute Sound, March 2014

"...For audiophiles and music lovers who want to listen to high-quality digital music files without the hassles of keeping another computer working optimally, the HAP-Z1ES is an attractively priced, yet fully featured option. It also doesn't hurt that its control interfaces are easy to use and unintimidating even for non-techy users...If you plan to spend more than $2000 on any digital front end, whether it be an audio-computer, CD player, DAC, newtwork player, or any other front end that uses digital files as a source, and you don't audition a HAP-Z1ES, you are failing to consider what may well be the benchmark digital product of 2014." - Steven Stone, The Absolute Sound, March 2014

Hi-Res Music Playback

The HAP-Z1ES can decode the following file formats: DSD (DSF, DSDIFF), PCM (44.1k/48k/88.2k/96k/176.4k/192kHz·16/24/32bit) DSD (2.8/5.6MHz), WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, ATRAC, MP3, AAC, WMA music file playback.

1TB Hard Drive for music playback

Store personal music of all formats for local music playback on the 1 terabyte1 hard drive. Hard Drive is expandable via USB external hard drives.

Analog FIR Filters

This digital-to-analog converter effectively reduces high-frequency noise in DSD signals. It features independent right and left channels, with four analog FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters per channel producing a combined one-clock delay. FIR filters are ideal for D/A conversion of DSD signals.

DSD Re-mastering Engine

This ideal D/A conversion system combines a high-performance DSP and FPGA (field programmable gate array) to convert all signals to 128 FS DSD signals. It was designed based on know-how garnered from Sony's direct 8-times oversampling and Extended SBM (Super Bit Mapping) technology for professional recorders.

Digital Sound Enhancement Engine

Offers natural sound with a spacious feel by restoring high frequency sound and the tail shape of the waveform likely to be removed through the audio compression process.

Wi-Fi Built-in

Newly designed built-in Wi-Fi increasing whole-house coverage and signal strength. HAP-Z1ES is rigorously tested to ensure its Wi-Fi signal strength. This real world testing is to certify it will work under the most extreme conditions.

CD Ripping

Please be advised that Sony has released new firmware version 16152R for HAPZ1ES and HAPS1

This firmware update permits CD ripping to WAV or FLAC file formats using a CD drive that connects through USB, without the need for a computer.

Please note that we recommend that the CD drive be powered via AC as the power output of the USB port is limited.

Drives that have been tested include:

-          Apple USB Super Drive MD564ZM/A

-          Buffalo BRXL-16U3

-          Samsung SE-208GB/RSBD

-          LG GP50NB40

Additionally the update adds compatibility with Gracenote (music metadata) for DSD files.

The update may be installed by connecting the player to the Internet and updating the software through the product’s menu.

Better than a Mytek 192 USB DAC!

I got the Sony HAP-Z1ES as a Christmas gift, and I did a head-to-head comparison with an excellent $1,500 DAC, the Mytek 192-DSD DAC. Both the Sony and the Mytek do Double-DSD and have excellent upsampling, so I was excited to try this test.

WOW!

The Sony was neck-and-neck with the Mytek with WAV , High Rez and DSD files... and was MUCH BETTER with CD or lower quality files!

I tried the Mytek with all the latest streaming software... and found that solution to be much more cumbersome and error prone to the Sony HDD player. The iPhone and iPad app for the Sony also won hands down!

I ran both through fully balanced AudioQuest Columbia or Colorado cables into my fully balanced BAT pre-amp and fully balanced amp.

I have been spending the last few weeks RE- DISCOVERING my music collection -- buying DSD and other high rez files from Acoustic Sounds, plus ripping fill WAV files to my iTunes, all of which is copied to my Sony HAP-Z1ES very quickly by the Sony software!

More Than I expected!!

I have been into digital audio for years and I took a chance on getting the HAP-Z1ES. First, I want say I did not use the Sony transfer software, after speaking to one of the very knowable tech reps at Acoustic Sounds, I just logged into one of my computers on my network and dragged and dropped 20 hi-rez albums at a time. This worked flawlessly and I high recommend it. Second, the HDD application Sony designed for the iPad is also great!! Third, the EQ of the internal dac is very accurate, I do have better sounds dacs for my taste, but this is no slouch. This is a great all in one approach, and the build quality is top notch. I highly recommend this product, it plays any you can throw at it!!

Luscious!!!

First of all i want to state that I never write reviews. This is the second one I've ever written. I just want to let people know how awesome this thing sounds. I also own the sony scdxa5400es sacd player and it too sounds amazing. This is very similar sounding. Dsd downloads sound like a dream on this. The channel separation is unbelievable. Mp3s with the dsd up convert sound pretty good. But the awesomeness of this machine is its sound when playing anything above the mp3 format. Wav, flac and apple lossless sound incredible but dsd is in a realm of its own. It's like HDTV to sdtv. It's that good. I'll keep the sony sacd player for sacd playback and use this for everything else. Really impressed with sony es line. Prob will always buy it.

I couldn't be more impressed with the sound quality and ease of use of this Sony digital player. Great sound with downloaded DSD and FLAC music, and really good sound with my CDs I ripped to FLAC. Even better, this is one easy player to use. I download files to my Mac computer and start the HAP software to copy files to the player. Then I control the player completely from a great app on my iPad. Highly recommended.
