Laws of physics declare that the higher the mass and stiffness of a body the less it will flex and vibrate - and this is reflected throughout the Model 30/2. The sub-chassis is machined from 19mm thick aluminum alloy plate and weighs approximately 38lbs. (17kg) while the base with its four supporting pillars adds a further 35lbs. (16kg). This offers the high mass and stiffness required for uncolored musical reproduction further aided by efficient extensional damping of both elements to reduce the amplitude and duration of vibrational modes. In contrast, in conventional turntables metal supporting springs often contribute significantly to coloration and a lack of background silence.
This unique suspension system employed has no sonic signature of its own. By hanging the sub-chassis on ninety-six strands of rubber in the form of forty-eight molded 'O' rings vibration both physical and airborne are virtually eliminated. This design places the center of gravity where it will give natural stability with minimal sensitivity to external influences. Any unwanted sub-chassis motion is controlled by four fluid dampers located in each of the supporting columns. These eliminate overshoot and give almost zero 'Q' recovery providing a mechanical stable environment. The isolation needed to prevent acoustic feedback is created by the resistive coupling of the damping fluid through which unwanted energy is dissipated. This function can be fine tuned using trimmers that can be adjusted with the use of the supplied gauge to give fixed settings or varied ones to suit individual conditions. Built-in locks, one at each corner of the sub-chassis, enable the suspension to be secured and automatically sealed for transport.
The mechanical parts of any turntable are of significant importance to ultimate sonic performance. The spindle of the Model 30/2 is 6.75 in. (170.5mm) long and 0.75 in. (19mm) in diameter. The massive sealed housing and individually fitted sintered bronze bearings in which the spindle sits are also of the ample proportions needed to ensure that the 13 in. (330mm) diameter platter weighing 15.5 lbs. (7kg) is adequately supported. The Model 30/2's excellent dynamics and pitch stability are largely the result of the immense care taken in the design and execution of these components. Additionally, the platter face is machined with a fine scroll found to interface with a vinyl record better than a plain surface and the reflex clamp provided ensures maximum contact with the platter even when severe record warp is present.
The turntable is driven by a 3-phase, 6 pulse, inductance motor, with 8 pole Neodymium magnets and 3 integrated Hall position sensors providing highly accurate and stable speed control, including 33.3, 45 and 78 rpm. The motor design incorporates a 4-layer surface mount technology pcb with on-board user adjustable speed variation control. This sophisticated electronically controlled motor is 'cogging-effect' free and virtually “vibrationless” largely due to its 5.5 lb. (2.5kg) weight. It is isolated on urethane mounts and is adjustable for accurate belt positioning. In the quest for perfection, even the stainless steel motor pulley has received detailed attention. It is crowned to ensure belt centrality, concentric within +/- 2.5 microns and secured to its precision ground tungsten steel shaft with dual screws to maintain rotational balance. From this the drive is transmitted via a ground rubber belt to an 8.25 in. (209mm) sub-platter weighing 5 lbs. (2.3kg).
