Over the past decade, new talents such as Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber, and Holly Cole have redefined the world of female jazz vocals. Cole's Temptation, a 1995 Blue Note release, is her musical tribute to the writings of Tom Waits. Besides being a superb audiophile recording (perfect in every production detail, from the rendering of Cole's amazing voice to the incredibly natural sound captured by producer Craig Street's team), this album has garnered kudos for her interpretation of Waits? unique compositions. Standouts include a catchy version of "Jersey Girl," which made it onto a number of radio playlists, and a rendition of "The Briar and the Rose," brilliantly augmented by the Canadian Brass. Also included are "Take Me Home," "Train Song," "Temptation," "Falling Down," "Invitation to the Blues," "Frank's Theme," "Little Boy Blue," "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," "Tango 'til They're Sore," "The Heart of Saturday Night," "Soldier's Things," "I Want You" and "Good Old World."

This a beautiful recording and great for showing off a high end music system. But... my copy has a small edge warp which causes a very annoying wow in Holly's voice. It's gone by the 2nd track but I sure wish their quality control was better.

Unfortunately this pressing is not a good one. Many clicks, or similar can be heart especially on the beginning of the disc. In addition the pressing had burrs which were not removed after the pressing operation. And finally they mixed up the label.

The music itself is fantastic. This interpretation of Waits songs is the best I have ever heart! This is great music which drilles directly to the heart!

From music side a must have, from press quality side...forget it

Holly Cole comes out of the grooves is such a way you cannot go back to the CD version of this great album w/o realizing how much an "integration" is never the same as the natural curve!

Beautiful girl, beautiful voice, great tunes

Holy Cole is a delight in every way: she just oozes soul out of her pores. This album lets her show off her stuff to a portion of the Tom Waitts song book - including a personal favorite: Temptation. What gut wrenching and intimate rendition of this classic. Very, very well captured and recorded on this record - which gets turned on my system often! If you like this lovely lady: don't pass up on some of her other greats - Don't Smoke in Bed and Romantically Hopeless.

This was a long awaited album for me as I regularly use the CD to check the changes in my system. The information from this record is out standing, texture of voice and instrument, timing and the recoding enviroment room etc was all there. And what great Tom Waits tracks to use. Overall a great redording.
