Satchmo Plays King Oliver is one of those titles that audiophiles have known about for years and a favorite at Hi Fi shows for demonstration. The first cut - "St. James Infimary" is out of this world like many of the other tunes including a great version of "Frankie and Johnny". Originally issued on Audio Fidelity, this classic reissue is available on 200-gram. There is also a companion 45 rpm disc of "St. James Infirmary" to be co-released as well. Not to be missed!!

"...The King Oliver tribute is a stunning find, with Pops and his sextet blazing through the likes of 'St. James Infirmary,' 'Frankie & Johnny,' and 'Jelly Roll Blues' picked up by Telefunken microphones arrayed in an M-S pattern. Satch's brass-blare trumpet, Peanuts Hucko's licorice clarinet, and Trummy Young's slide trombone are right there in the room." - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs")

Clean vinyl...almost CD like. For a 50's recording, it does not sound as if any sonics were lost with the master tape. Great Songs and Great Sonics. Big open sound stage, great detail, palpable images, and accurate tonality on all instruments and voice. This is a true demonstration LP.

A HiFi must buy!

Simply put, the single best recording I own. The music is fantastic but the recording will leave you breathless, shaking your head in disbelief. It's perfect! Whenever I am asked to demo my stereo for a friend who's never listened to a decent home system, I always play this record and it always blows people away.

Great sound! I found it also enjoyable to read the back ground of each song. I leared quite a bit about Mr. Armstrong

You won't find a better recording than this - great quality paired with top notch vocals and instruments. If you own a turntable then you need this album - the CD version just doesn't have the presence that this vinyl rendition does. Don't miss out - get this before they are all gone.

Prepare yourself for a real treat

"Papa Dip" in the highest of fidelity. Get the 12" 45 to go along with. No Louis Armstrong fan should have to go through life with out a copy of this album. The Quiex SV-P is amazing as usual. Considering all of the technological progress made since this recording, I am amazed at just how good something from this bygone era can sound.

Excellent sound and interesting music

King Oliver was one of Louis first employer. On this album from around 60' he takes us back to music he played in the 20-30's in King Oliver's band. This means that it is maybe a little bit too much "dixie" music for my taste but at the same time it is on a very high level. For the music I give it 3 stars out of five. For the sound I give it 5 stars. It is excellent but can be a little bit edgy if your equipment has very high resolution on top.

Please, whatever you do, get this album! All the hype is real, just listen to St James' and you will realize your money has been well spent.

As one who owns and regularly plays most of what Louis ever recorded, I rate this recording as a treasure. Particularly outstanding relative to the vocals. Except for his duets with Ella, a recording I've cherished over the years, I've never heard him in better voice.
