"There is no finer orchestral playing among American orchestras...Bravissimos are due to all concerned...a triumph of artistry, both musical and technical." - Heuwell Tircuit, InTune magazine

The world-renowned Minnesota Orchesta in its first recordings with its dynamic music director! Eiji Oue, a protege of Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein, has set the entire Twin Cities area on fire with his eciting and masterful interpretations.

Eiji Oue became the ninth music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in 1995. This disc along with Exotic Dances from the Opera marks the recording debut of this gifted conductor, who is quickly developing a prominent identity in the international musical world.

NOTE: Half-speed Mastering involves a capturing process in which the original recording master is played back at exactly half of the recorded speed. A sequenced cutting lathe is then timed at exactly half of the playback speed. This process allows twice as much time to carve a groove that accurately represents the sound on the master tape. Half-speed mastering allows for cleaner reproduction and also permits extended high frequency response, extending into the ultrasonic region.

My copy of the Stravinsky disc, is noisy on Side 1: Firebird. Further to this, most of the tempos for the Firebird are pedestrian, ponderous, slow. Orchestral playing adequate. The sound quality and engineering are superb. Side 2: Nightingale is much much better, with beautifully judged and atmospheric enterpretation, this work just 'suits' Oue. This side is as silent as a grave, disc pressing wise. Also great engineering, although slightly 'different' to S1.

Though the spectacular first release from Quality Records, Cat Steven's "Tea For The Tillerman" grabbed most of the attention this month, the news that Reference Recordings has teamed up with Quality Records for it's new series of vinyl releases is just as exciting. If the first Reference Masrercut is any indicator, we are going to be spoiled superb 200gm pressings of recordings from the great Reference Recordings catalog. This has quickly become one of my favorite recordings of Stravinsky's masterpiece "The Firebird", and is right up there with Dorati's on Mercury. The sound is incredible, the pressing is perfect. Definitely recommended!
