This SACD version of The Very Thought Of You features the very first ever original mono versions of "Don't Blame Me" and "There Is No Greater Love." NEVER BEFORE RELEASED!

Space constraints in authoring this disc prevent these two bonus tracks from being included on the CD layer of this disc. But for the SACD layer, we've got the complete mono album along with the two never-before-released bonus tracks, for a total of 16 songs.

Playable in mono, stereo and multichannel.

Included with this deluxe reissue is a 3,400-word essay by Chris Hall on the album.

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat "King" Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!

"...if you haven't picked up every one of the Blue Note and Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem and company at Acoustic Sounds, you're really missing out!" - David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52

"...exquisite standards, Gordon Jenkins and his orchestra, and that achingly beautiful Capitol sound...this disc's multiple layers offer mono, stereo and three-channel." Sound Quality = 92% out of 100% - Ken Kessler, HiFi News, January 2011

"...Thanks to the gorgeous remastering and improved quality afforded by the format, you'll hear every breath, as if you were in the studio alongside Cole himself during a recording session." - The Second Disc, December 2010

This has been a totally no-expenses-spared project. Using the original three-track work tapes from Capitol's vaults, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman along with DSD specialist Gus Skinas bring you an entirely incomparable SACD experience. In addition to the stereo mixes, this SACD includes a three-track transfer for multichannel playback and the original mono mix taken from separate microphone feeds, mixing consoles and tape machines at the original sessions. In order to master from the three-track masters, AcousTech had to be outfitted for three-channel playback. That meant Kevin Gray had to find a third identical monitoring channel chain (including mixing board, amplifier and speaker) as well as a three-track playback headstack and also a three-track preview head for the vinyl cutting system.  It was a massive assignment. We've spent a fortune to include these extra bells and whistles and to make this a truly historic reissue.

Nat "King" Cole and arranger Gordon Jenkins followed their hit album Love Is The Thing with The Very Thought Of You, foraging further into romantic and sensual bliss and creating the audio equivalent of a distillation of romantic ardor in a bottle. The sixteen ballads of The Very Thought Of You, each with their own euphoric tinge, include the title track "The Very Thought of You," "For All We Know," "Paradise," and "But Beautiful." Again orchestrated with the heavenly strings of the distinctive Gordon Jenkins, sympathetically backing the intimately expressive and supremely musical voice of the incomparable Nat "King" Cole, the result again stands among its era's finest, most stylistically defining recordings of popular music and continues to enchant listeners to this day.

The Very Thought of You was recorded in finely polished monaural and more minimalistic 3-channel stereophonic versions, each with dedicated microphones, console, mix and recorders. Each offers a different sonic perspective. The monaural recording was heard on the original hit records while the stereophonic recording offers the potential for a stunning wide-range realism. Using the original first generation full-track mono and 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and custom headstacks, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman along with DSD specialist Gus Skinas bring you an entirely incomparable SACD experience.

For this deluxe hybrid SACD,  a stereo version is available in standard resolution on the CD layer and in high resolution on the DSD stereo layer, while the stereo versions are also available in high resolution 3-channel sound on the DSD multi-channel layer. Original releases contained 14 tracks, omitting two superb tracks recorded for the album, "Don't Blame Me" and "There Is No Greater Love," due to space constraints. Space constraints in authoring this disc again prevent these two bonus tracks from being included on the CD layer of this disc. However the SACD layer features all 16 tracks in mono and stereo - the very first ever release of the original mono versions of "Don't Blame Me" and "There Is No Greater Love"! In addition a 3,400-word essay by Chris Hall about the album is included. No expense was spared to make this the ultimate digital version of this album and a historic reissue.

Originally released in 1958.

"I just received my first of seven Nat "King" Cole SACD releases, and I want to say thank you for a superior job. The sound is the best I have ever heard Nat, and having the center channel makes it so much more enjoyable. I am very much looking forward to receiving the rest of the set. Thanks again for an outstanding job." - Andy Rogulich, High Fidelity Mastering, Albuquerque, New Mexico

"...I know these recordings like the palm of my hand, but your three-channel, stereo, and mono restorations have so completely rocked my world that I have been on a cloud for two weeks...I cannot believe the amount of color and nuance that you extracted from the masters. Thanks to the magic you have done with these master tapes, I have had my favorite singer live in my living room for two weeks. I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful musical experience and the great emotions I have felt, hearing this music as if for the first time. BRAVO!!!" - Roberto-Juan Gonzalez, Acoustic Sounds customer

Incredible sound. It's as though Nat is in the room in front of you. You can clearly hear every nuance / detail of the orchestra. Never would believe original recording dates back over 50 years. If you have a SACD player, I highly recommend this.

In a word WOW !! I have recently received this album and listened to it twice through so far. I am just amazed at what I am hearing. It is like Nat is in my house crooning his way through this beautiful material. If I have the opportunity I would love to listen it on a high level audiophile system. I honesty believe this series of albums will set the benchmark for all future remastering efforts. My sincerest thanks to all involved. If you are a potential buyer looking at this page, do not hesitate. Buy this album. You will not be dissappointed.

A New Gold Standard for 'Nat King Cole' on CD

As an avid Nat King Cole Fan, I've collected his work on CD since 1987.In my opinion most of these releases have been very good indeed, some have been excellent and a very few have been stunning.Up to this point, the latter description had been reserved for the Nat Cole DCC Gold CD releases from around 1997 (mastered by Steve Hoffman)- but with this new release from Analogue Productions I have to say that the New Audio Reference point for Nat on CD has been firmly established.Comparing the DCC version of 'The Very Thought of You' and this new AP disc it's clear from track 1 that you're getting a far more 'dynamic' presentation. It'd be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that 15dB of gain had been applied and that everything is simply 'louder' but the truth is that every space within the stereo image is now full of musical information with clear & precise resolution allied to impressive scale(it's a shame the vocal drop-out on track 6 at 2'54" still exists though).Highly Recommended!

Handsomely done

Unlike 'Love is the thing', all 14 original LP tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, are available on the SACD layer of this disc in glorious 3 channel hi-rez sound. With Nat's vocals coming from the centre channel, the sumptuous strings of Gordon Jenkins are firmly planted in the L/R speakers, wrapping you in a cocoon of warm, clear sound. What better combination could you possibly want than Nat 'King' Cole, Gordon Jenkins and high resolution SACD sound. Heaven !

I am always looking for that perfect Vocal recording to demo to clients to show them how a good vocal can be. This is the first recording I have ever come across that surpasses what I have looked for in a vocal recording. If you have a SACD player you will want to get this along with all of the other SACD three-track Nat King Cole recordings. Love is the Thing is just as stunning as this recording, and I am sure all of the other recordings that will be released will be of the same stunning performances. It is truly amazing when you think this is only a three microphone recording made in the 1950's. They don't make them like this anymore, but they should!

Wonderful re-mastering effort

What a treat these re-masters will be for many years. With the choice of mono, stereo and 3-track playback, you can't ask for anything more. Thanks you Acoustic Sounds, for this new series.

I got my copy of this SACD in the mail, today. I slipped it into my Oppo BDP-83, listened to the three-channel version of this classic album, and spent the rest of the afternoon floating about 6 inches above the floor! YES, this restoration of this classic album is nothing short of MIRACULOUS!

The orchestra, rhythm section, massed strings, and harp, sits in a semi-circle behind the singer, and EVERY nuance and coloration of his velvet voice is captured and presented with a depth, intimacy, nuance, and subtlety I have NEVER experienced while listening to previous issues of this disc. The Gordon Jenkins arrangements, with all their lushness, chromatic complexities, and melodic contrapuntal invention, are reproduced, nay, ETCHED, like a luminous cloud behind the singer. Also, the DSD resolution allows subtle colors of the instrumental sound to emerge that were buried in previous incarnations of these recordings.

This, to me, is the SACD release of the year.

A Warm Happy Place...

describes how I feel listening to this recording. I close my eyes and his voice just wraps around me and I feel safe and relaxed. The title track sounds better than I've ever heard it but once I got to Paradise, the shivers started and I have a new favorite song. I can hear every instrument distinctly and I feel like I'm on the other side of the microphone from him. Then This is All I Ask starts and I'm blown away again. I listened to the stereo, mono and multichannel versions, which all sound great, but the multichannel is the one that gave me the goosebumps. The lack of tape hiss or any other distorted background noise makes it an almost eerie listening experience. I immediately ordered Love is The Thing. I'm so happy I bought this and couldn't recommend it enough.

One of NKC's finest albums

Love is the Thing is one of the most beautiful albums of love ballads ever recorded. It's so ethereal and transcendent that it's almost impossible to ever equal. But, with the very thought of you (lower case, as in the text on the cover) Nat did just that. Perhaps no song on this album is greater than the definitive version of Stardust found on Love, but what you have here is a larger, longer, and more complex album. It's just as beautiful as Love, but there's simply more of it--14 track on the original (compared to 12 for Love), and on this version we get all 16 tracks (all wonderful) to create an epic album of love in the finest sense.

The audio quality, I know, will be stunning. Quite simply we are going to be in the room with Nat shown on the cover, right inside that mic that he's singing into. I know that Steve Hoffman and his associates are going to give us a treat beyond anything that's ever been heard before-unless you were inside the studio during the recording dates in 1958!
