If you really want to hear the Beatles as they were originally recorded then this set is a must. There are so many differences between the stereo and mono mixes it is hard to specify examples. I think this is the last time the Beatles will be released unless there are plans for SACD/DVD audio so my advise is to go for the best out there. Enjoy!!!!!!

This is a good set, especially if you don't have the vinyl. I like the small differences in the mono mixes. Also, the CDs in this set are made to look more like the original vinyl that came out. If you are a fan of the original packaging and a fan of the original music, you will like this. If you just like the beatles and want to hear everything you are familiar with, go with the stereo set. The mono set will give you the mixes of the vinyl you (or I) couldn't afford at today's prices.

Better sound but not there, yet

Compared to the Love LP or CD, the quality of is about half way now. Much improved from the ear pearcing sound of the 80's re-releases but not comperable to the original LP releases. Can we get Steve Hoffman to give it a try?????PLEASE????

Finally...the glorious, full-powered mono mixes!

There has been much discussion of the mono mixes being the definitive Beatles recordings, because George Martin and the band put their time and sweat into preparing the mono mixes...and left the stereo mixes for later, as an afterthought. And truly, the sound quality of these mixes appears to back up that theory. Songs like "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "Paperback Writer," which sound weak and disjointed in stereo, pack a loud and powerful punch in mono. And while some may argue that the stereo mixes of Sgt. Pepper and the White Album are more open and "breathe" better, there is enough going for the mono mixes to make them essential additions to any Beatles collection.

And anyone who has seen the packaging of these Japanese-produced sets will tell you...they are beautiful!

One thing to note, however. The item description here mentions the mini-documentaries. Those were only included with the stereo issues...NOT the mono box. But don't worry, you're not missing anything special.

Administrator note: Thank you for the info Mark, the description has now been fixed.

Not What I Hoped For

Contrary to what many people have said, I found the recordings rather flat. Perhaps this is because I was used to the admittedly flawed stereo versions. The very best Beatle recording I have is the first release of Love Songs on LP. The CD set isn't even CLOSE to that quality. I just gifted the CD set to a buddy in England. Hopefully he will like them more than I did.
