A landmark genre-defining album, Giant Steps has been hailed as John Coltrane's finest work. Coltrane and his band mates create compelling, frenzied and beautiful sonic landscapes which helped revolutionize jazz. Released in January 1960, Giant Steps was John's first album devoted entirely to his own compositions and confirmed his command of tenor saxophone and his emerging skill as a composer. Mastered by Bernie Grundman.

Coltrane inside speaker

Sounds awesome! Coltrane is inside the speaker! Despite the current technology, I never heard anything with such quality as this recording. According to the booklet, the recording is done without any processing, equalization, etc.. At that time there were no overduds, it was all recorded live! If someone does not like the vintage soundstage, it's better to burn all the best jazz recordings ever made and listen to Beyonce in DTS 7.1

A Classic

This is a fine mastering of this classic album. The only thing I don't like (I think its the same on other issues) is the soundstage. The sax and piano are on the left channel and the drums and bass are mostly on the right. The bass is somewhat more centered, but overall I kept having the desire to press the mono button on my Conrad Johnson preamp. I do recommend this album, I just don't think the original 2 track mix was best. Still if you have to get just one... this may be it.
