A Classic Box Set Reborn
Miles Davis Quintet/Great Prestige Recordings Now on 45 RPM

One of Analogue Productions' most successful and collectible projects has been the Miles Davis Quintet/The Great Prestige Recordings deluxe box set on 33 1/3 LP. Now, that beautiful five-album set is being reintroduced. And at 45 RPM, it's more stunning than ever!

Featuring a 12" x 12" 16-page gorgeous booklet, packaged with the LPs in a deluxe, heavy-duty box, this set is the end-all of Miles' work for the legendary Prestige label from 1951 through 1956. Stereophile awarded the first incarnation of this set Recording of the Month in their March 1997 issue, giving it five stars for both music and sonics. That was at 33 1/3 RPM. Imagine these same records at 45 RPM!

The Miles Davis Quintet recorded five immortal albums for Prestige: Miles, Relaxin', Workin', Cookin' and Steamin', with what is likely Miles' best-ever group, featuring Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers and Red Garland. All of those albums are included in this limited edition box set. The albums are pressed on 180-gram vinyl and mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering. They are packaged in a deluxe box with original album covers and liner notes, plus an essay by Bob Blumenthal and photos of the band by William Claxton, Sy Johnson and Bengt H. Malmqvist.

Noisy, poor quality control

Musical content is superb, but I was disappointed in how noisy some of the lp's were.

Magnificent, a substantial improvement over the 33-1/3 rpm LPs released 10+ years ago. Pressings are good (although there is some noise in places) and the covers are well printed and assembled. Booklet is identical to that included in the old box, except that the pages describing the preparation of the masters, and the cutting and pressing process, have been removed. Also, some of the studio chatter and false starts have been removed. One particularly perverse example: at the end of "Woody 'n' You," Miles says, "Okay?" Bob Weinstock tells him to do it over; Miles testily replies, "Why?" while Coltrane asks, "Could I have the beer opener?" Here, the chatter is faded out after Davis's response, and Coltrane's question goes unasked. Not a big deal -- unless you expect the record to match Ira Gitler's liner notes: "At the end we hear Miles say 'Okay?' and Bob Weinstock, in jest, tells him to 'do that one over.' Miles asks, 'Why?' but Coltrane, unconcerned, looks for the beer opener."

I have been a fan of Miles Davis for a long time and when the 33 rpm version of this box set first came out I couldn't afford it and it sold out so quickly I didn't have the chance to buy one. When these 45 rpm's were released I jumped in them first thing! These albums are some of the best Miles Davis recorded and these new 45 versions are simply stunning! The packaging, artwork, and most importantly the sound they produce brings the quality of Miles skills to a whole new level! No background noise or hiss and the dynamics in these LPs are amazing!!

Pour yourself a good drink, turn down the lights, and settle in for the ultimate Prestige experience. Well, don't get too settled, you do have to flip the record every 10 minutes or so. Recordings like this are why we fuss over our equipment and plunk down way more money than we should for things like isolation devices, cables, and power conditioners. This is the payoff.

WONDERFUL!!!

This is a wonderful set, with massively upgraded sound and an amazing dynamic range -- the timbre of Miles's muted horn is so rich, and sounds like it is right there in the room with you. You can hear every transient pluck of the bass strings...the sonic detail is breathtaking. Buy this now before it's gone!

Everyone should own one

I own all the original pressings of this set. In my opinion these re-issues are better. The quiet 45rpm vinyl and gorgeous mastering job make all the difference.
