"…AcousTech and Cisco have done a fabulous job in bringing one of the most insightful performances of this great work to a new generation of music lovers. You can take your 6-eye original and put it in with your Frisbees…Wonderful performance, now with outstanding sound quality." – Richard S. Foster, Hi-Fi+, Issue 51

I've received 2 copies of this record, and BOTH have had serious issues involving the inner sleeve and the glue holding the poly to the paper of the inner sleeve interacting with the vinyl.

It creates staining and surface noise which is a shame because as soon as the stylus gets deep enough in to the record (passing the staining), it sounds absolutely fantastic. For a limited run reissue that is now out of print, this is bad. Getting a good copy may not be possible.

Perhaps the 3rd copy will be okay, though I'm not all that hopeful.

Great music, poor pressing

Great to listen to, however some very loud distracting pops and ticks. It's a shame because the music is great. Is it worth it? To me yes, however maybe not for everyone. The music feels great, however doesn't always sound great. Disappointing.

this is an incredible sounding Lp and recording.however the first one i got had a large gouge in it and multiple surface scrathes , as it had been trodden on with heavy boots on concrete then attacked with a knife.Utterly unplayable.the second copy is perfect on side 1 but side 2 has 15 loud clicks at the start followed by a lot of surface noise.Ive given up on getting a decent copy since I live in the UK and it costs me in postage almost what the LP costs to return it.So Ive bought 2 and still dont own a good copy.

with the previous two reviews of this great recording of Shostakovich's fifth, a well traveled piece so easy to mess-up. Bernstein doesn't mess-up and provides a very intense yet controled read of the work. The re-edition by Cisco is excellent - and offers a great support of this beautiful performance. Highly recommanded, right up there with Rostropovich and the LSO live - a quite different perspective on the fifth but fascinating all the same.

IS THE RE MASTERING EFFORT OF THE YEAR?

If you own the original release and compare it with this remarkable transfer, you will know what I mean and I thoroughly concur with the reviewer who made a similar comment in Hi Fi Plus when he suggested that the original could be more less disposed of in favour of its new incarnation.

The sound, once barely acceptable is now quite magnificent. One usually reliable US hi fi magazine only gave this recording 3 stars. Don't believe it, it's five all the way. In fact, there is not too much better when it comes to an orchestra at full throttle in a relatively modern work (composed 1937).

In terms of performance quality, this has always been one of the more notable accounts. Bernstein was very good with Shostakovich. The orchestra puts in one of its more memorable efforts and the various solo parts are very well executed. The clarinet can be difficult to record well but Stanley Black's liquorice stick sounds just right.

If I could shake Mr Cisco's hand, I would do so. Great work!

Classic Performance of this Symphony

This is the classic Bernstein performance from the late '50s. The recording is superb, with a fine soundstage, and beautiful string tone. Bernstein takes the last movement at an extremely fast pace, compared to modern performances that slow the tempo down.
