2007 Grammy Nominee for Best Orchestral Performance

Few works of art – musical or otherwise – are as firmly established in the canon of global culture as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The sheer size and complexity of it is daunting even today, and at the time of its composition it was a highly revolutionary work. Even so, the audience at the first performance, in 1824, was enthusiastic – as audiences have been ever since. Its appeal has not only stood the test of time, however – the Ninth holds significance for people all over the world, regardless of country: the closest we have to a truly universal piece of music.

Channeling Bethoven

Vanska and his forces clearly revel in Beethoven's emotional narrative. This performance seems to follow Beethoven's tempo markings in the score yet in a wholly organic flow, ever surprising and inevitable. The performance reveals Beethoven's pacing of thought as the movements progress. The third movement, which often loses impulse in other recorded versions, is simply the best, most poetic version I've heard, whether live from one of six different conductors or in a dozen recordings by different orchestras. There is an almost unbearable excitement as the fourth movement begins with the basses making a triumphant statement of their theme. This builds to the entrance of the famous line from Beethoven himself: "O Freunde, nicht diese Tone!". The fine soloists and chorus inhabit the text as though they are channeling Beethoven and Schiller themselves. The Minnesota chorus sings German with clarity and idiomatic conviction. The best ever? Who can say? The one to get? Absolutely.
