Amazing Pre-Amp!! Soundstage Expansion Anyone?

Reviewer: Paul S.
As the previous review states, this nifty device comes with stock 12AX7 tubes of unknown (China) origin, although they have the Pro-Ject logo on them. I have already researched and selected some Mullard reissues to replace them soon. However, this is about the sound and how it makes my system sound like I paid more for everything. I posted a review two weeks ago for my new Debut III Red turntable, and commented that it exposed the fact my caps in the old Harmon Kardon preamp phono stage are shot. Despite that handicap, and audible subsonic rumble, the turntable revealed details that I never heard before. Then, on eBay, I saw this Tube Box listed for $199 Buy It Now, so I did. It only took five minutes to hook up, and within ten minutes I no longer had rumble (even with the filter turned off) a HUGE soundstage, and the pleasure of rediscovering my records all over again. I listened to the Mofi release of Abraxas last night and it was a 360 experience. Well worth the money!!

Good value, good sound, but where is the magic of tubes?

For the price I was more than happy... Tubes in a phono preamp for under $400... WOW!! but the reality is that the little box is not expensive, but gives little magic: The bass is certainly pleasant and almost accurate but not extended, the highs are clear almost all the time, but in certain conditions are a little unnatural and out of control (this little box is not the best friend of Grado low gain cartridges or strong and complicate music) and if you have a low gain cartridge and a low gain preamp like I do... hum will be a problem. Even when the Tube Box do not respond notably to tube rolling, do yourself a favor and change those cheap tubes (the low gain of the not expensive JAN-5751's can help this beauty box to control the highs). There is a very good side: value. In my opinion, the tube box is a very god choice in the task of improve built in preamps, because with $350 you can't do better (at least in the tube world).
