"Nothng but manna from analog heaven can be found within the balance of Analogue Productions' year-long-plus Atlantic 75 anniversary reissue series ... but to my ears, the crème de la crème of the lot are all the reissuances culled from the prime, more progressive-leaning '70s era of the Genesis catalog. ... A few highlights to whet your aural whistle: 1) Mike Rutherford's high-pitched, 12-string acoustic guitarwork and the overall rise/fall drama of "The Musical Box" (LP1, Side 1, Track 1, November 1971's Nursery Cryme). 2) The full majesty of Tony Banks' lengthy piano intro (and outro!) and Steve Hackett's career-defining guitar solo on "Firth of Fifth" (LP1, Side 2, Track 1, September 1973's Selling England by the Pound). 3) Peter Gabriel's pleading lead vocals and Phil Collins' ever-clever drumming on "Back in N.Y.C." (LP2, Side 3, Track 1, November 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway). 4) The all-in, all-band composition of the mostly instrumental "Los Endos," replete with thematically squonky, volcanic callbacks to prior tracks and other suppers past (LP2, Side 4, Track 2, A Trick of the Tail). I could go on — and I will, when I can!" — Mike Mettler, AnalogPlanet's Top LPs of 2024, Dec. 20, 2024. Read the entire review here.
"Analogue Productions continuously honors Atlantic Records' 75th anniversary by dusting off the tape vaults and providing the best-sounding pressings of a selection of their beloved catalog, much to the delight of Genesis purists. ... The soft opening section of "The Musical Box" offers intricate 12-string acoustic arrangements with detailed separation and distinctive stereo panning, from which the 45rpm treatment dramatically benefits." — Music = 10/11; Sound = 11/11, Dylan Peggin, TrackingAngle.com. "The sonic differences are not subtle. This reissue trounces the original U.S. vinyl and Definitive Edition Remaster CD, and beats up the circa-2010 Classic Records reissue. ... This is a triumph for Analogue Productions and a cause for celebration for Genesis fans." — Frank Doris, Copper Magazine, Issue 213. Read the entire article here.
"I really got a sense — MUCH bigger soundstage, especially some of the background vocals when Phil (Collins) comes in, a much richer, much broader sense of space. The instrumentation really opened up in moments where it needed to open up. ... This was allowing the music to shine, both the low and high end ... If I was to only have one (copy), right now, if I was buying vinyl, this is absolutely the one I would pick up, without question. It would serve me as my definitive version of this record." — Jason Gorber, That Shelf, YouTube video
"For Genesis fans, this 45 (RPM edition) is a revelation. It offers everything that's great about (the Classic Records 33 RPM), and retains the character of the original album that you hear in the U.K. pressing, but gives it space to breathe. And it enhances everything just enough where you've never heard the record sound this good. ... Everything about it is a win, again, for the Atlantic 75 Series." — Scott Wilson, The Pressing Matters, YouTube video
Genesis' album Nursery Cryme, released in November 1971, marked a significant moment in the band's evolution and showcased the burgeoning talents of their new drummer and vocalist, Phil Collins, plus guitarist Steve Hackett.
Nursery Cryme saw the band take a more aggressive direction of some songs, with substantially improved drumming. The opening piece, "The Musical Box" combined the band's trademark mix of 12-string guitars with harsh electric guitars and keyboards. The song, a macabre fairy story set in Victorian Britain, became the inspiration for the album cover, and went on to be a live favorite.
This album played a pivotal role in establishing the band's progressive rock sound and laid the foundation for their future success.
Although Peter Gabriel remained the band's primary vocalist, Collins' distinctive voice began to shine through on tracks like "For Absent Friends" and "Harlequin." Collins' vocals added a new dimension to the band's sound, blending seamlessly with Gabriel's, and hinting at the vocal prowess that would later define his solo career. His emotive and versatile singing style contributed to the album's overall charm.
Nursery Cryme is regarded as a crucial stepping stone in Genesis' discography, and with time, became recognized as a progressive rock classic. The album received acclaim for its adventurous and intricate compositions, combining elements of folk, rock, and classical music. Genesis' signature storytelling lyrics, often filled with surreal and whimsical imagery, captivated listeners and added depth to the music.
Critics praised the band's musicianship, with particular attention to the intricate guitar work of Steve Hackett and the melodic basslines of Mike Rutherford.
