Jimi Hendrix's electrifying first Band of Gypsys performance!

Mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Bernie Grundman

Never-before-released material from the first New Year's Eve set!

"Hendrix devotees are finally served with a full, unedited Band of Gypsys performance, unlike the eponymous album assembled from the second night's shows at Fillmore East: this is the complete debut of the Dec. 31, '69. While Hendrix-ologists may debate which is superior, this has an undeniable fluidity and coherence, and it's evident that Hendrix had a lot more to offer. Those who love Jimi as a bluesman — and who felt he should have done more with the genre — will feel chills when he cuts loose on 'Hear My Train a Comin' and 'Bleeding Heart.' One of the best posthumous Hendrix releases, it's like a bonus disc for one of the greatest live sets of all time." — Sound Quality: 90% - Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News, June 2017

Jimi Hendrix closed 1969 by disbanding the Jimi Hendrix Experience and assembling a new group, the short-lived Band of Gypsys. They debuted in four historic concerts at New York City's Fillmore East — two sets on New Year's Eve, and two more on New Year's Day 1970. The latter shows were combined and edited for the famed Band of Gypsys album in April 1970.

The first night's first concert is now getting a proper release as Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69. The new album marks the first time the complete early set has been released in any configuration. Enjoy this new material on Hybrid Stereo SACD from Analogue Productions!

Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 and People, Hell & Angels are being released the same day in SACD and high-resolution digital formats, the first-ever Jimi Hendrix hi-res digital releases!

Album producers Experience Hendrix L.L.C. is led by the team of Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott. Kramer was Jimi Hendrix's primary recording engineer; Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 was mixed from the original 1-inch 8-track master tapes by Eddie Kramer and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Bernie Grundman.

People, Hell & Angels is a collection of previously unreleased studio recordings; the album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart in March 2013 following its release. The album features studio versions of many of the songs featured on Machine Gun. In addition to the Machine Gun title track, one of Hendrix's last classics, the 11-song set — collected here in its entirety and in order — includes songs such as "Hear My Train A Comin'" and "Ezy Ryder" that he was still fine-tuning at the time of his death on Sept. 18, 1970.

The original Band of Gypsys album included Hendrix's first work with his new trio, rounded out by bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles, after the breakup of the Experience in 1969. Machine Gun: The Filmore East First Show 12/31/69 chronicles the group's first-ever live performance.

"We didn't know what to expect from the audience, and the audience didn't know what to expect from us, but from the time we hit that first note, they were in awe," Cox notes in a press release announcing the set. "You had Jimi Hendrix, a drummer who had been with the Electric Flag and Wilson Pickett, and I was the new kid on the block."

Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix's legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career that boasted of indefinite possibilities.

To be honest..... I wasn't sure what to expect from this release as there has been a fairly steady flow of live shows issued in the years since Jimi's death. All have a certain appeal to anyone who is a fan but some are much more interesting than others and I assumed that the best of these Fillmore shows had already seen the light of day. I cannot tell you how much joy it brings me, not just to hear this entire show for the first time, but to hear it in such wonderful sound quality. There is a "presence" to this recording/performance that brings a smile to my face with each repeated listen. This is a wonderful document and I could not be more pleased with this purchase. This (SACD) is the only version that I own so I cannot offer a comparison to the vinyl issue. But I can say that I am completely satisfied with this disc and I would encourage anyone who is "on the fence" concerning this title to jump over to this side. Thanks to all at A.P. for the superior mastering!

Totally Awesome !

I have been very pumped since I heard this was coming out. To be honest I find rock releases hit and miss on SACD and tend to buy more Jazz in the format but I have really enjoyed the mastering on APO titles. Well they didn't let me down. This is an excellent recording! I must of played Machine Gun (the song) ten times last night. This disc has such full sound it was like almost being there, the bass is warm and the highs are not too bright. Perfectly balanced mastering. I really hope they will release more of his music on SACD. I tend to lean towards MoFi for rock releases but APO has hit this one out of the park (they did an excellent job with the Beach Boys as well). I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this SACD. Now can they get the licences for the Traffic albums because they were made for high res and the flat transfer of John Barleycorn from Japan just didn't cut it!
