This re-issue of Tres Hombres is a stunner. The dynamic range is off the charts. The pressing is quiet/flat and the sound mix is perfect. The bass response is clean, tight & chest thumping low. The vocals are perfectly recessed and high's are very clean without a hint of listener fatigue. 5 Stars for the pressing + 5 Stars for the sound quality mix & 6 Stars for the music. Highly Recommended!!!!

Love the sound of this lp great bass tones, and no bar code on the cover, sence Warner brothers issued it they even chosed to use the palm tree label, that I thought was a nice touch.

I have an early London pressing of this album which I bought back in the seventies. Needless to say, it has seen better days and still packed some punch but just too noisy. When I ordered the new album, I figured if I was lucky it would retain the original dynamics of the old record but be quieter and I would be satisfied with that. When I dropped the needle on the new album I was absolutely blown away! La Grange literally shook my headphones! The album is quiet with the exception of a little of the tape hiss which is also present on my original record. I am so pleased with this album and would highly recommend it.

This was among my very favorite records as a kid. Growing up in Texas and learning to play rock guitar, Billy Gibbons was my absolute hero. I spent countless hours and wore out four copies of "Tres Hombres" trying to get at his licks. Released almost a decade before “Eliminator” and MTV and the 28-inch beards, the LP is perhaps the finest document of Rev. Willie G’s hair-raising guitar prowess. He blazes on “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”, and lays it down on “Jesus Just Left Chicago”. Of course, side 2's “LaGrange” is the monumental track that made ZZ Top a household name. Warner’s has done a wonderful job with the remastering and pressing. It sounds phenomenal – big, punchy and present (quiet, too). For the first time, I feel like I’m hearing "Tres Hombres" as was originally intended. It has given me tremendous respect for the guys who recorded it. Have Mercy! I loved it so much I blogged about it on http://drewciferstonezone.blogspot.com/2008/02/tres-hombres-revisited.html

Two things about this issue of Tres Hombres:

One, the original "as intended" mix is used just like the original London LP once was. When CD-time came, Bill Ham flogged everything with disco-style remixing. Unless you had that original London LP (which is soaked in compression) this is the one and only way to hear what the band first approved.

And what's there is/was absolutely beautiful.

Two, it's entirely convincing (between style and the fact the package is so well done) this album could have been released this year. Timeless as much of the material is, would it be so difficult to think "Waiting For The Bus" seems dated next to a modern White Stripes record?

The "natural" idea in music is coming back to fashion and so is Steve Hoffman's approach to mastering. However, nothing can come close to his complexity of dedication and simplicity of technical approach.

The proof is there. The album was better than you think. You will be amazed.
