"This viscerally punchy electric blues is anchored by unimprovable harp playing from Junior Wells, a young Buddy Guy by his side. From the kick of up-tempo numbers like "Snatch It Back and Hold It" to the deep, sexy, slow moan of "Early in the Morning," you just can't top this. Current audiophile bona fides are in excellent order, thanks to fine remastering by Kevin Gray and Analogue Productions for 45 RPM, LP, SACD/CD, and DSD download." — Sasha Matson, Stereophile's Records To Die For, February 2018

"...this album is DYNOMITE and this pressing is sweet. A truly great album done truly well." Music = 11/11; Sound = 10/11 - Mark Schlack

One of the all-time great urban blues records and the best-seller in the famed Delmark catalog. Hoodoo Man Blues is so full of bravado and snap it'll make you feel tough just listening to it. Not all of the Delmark titles were recorded very well, but this one certainly was. And at 45 RPM 2LP, plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, this now stands as the undisputed definitive version. For 2020 we've added a redesigned gatefold jacket with new artwork, plus, additional liner notes from Jim O'Neal, co-founder of Living Blues Magazine.

Hoodoo Man Blues, which features Buddy Guy on guitar, is not only Junior Wells' first LP appearance, it's damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45s by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc., but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of the limitations of juke box/airplay promotion. Hoodoo Man Blues went a long way in the popularization of real Chicago blues and of Junior Wells.

Originally released in 1965.

Buddy Guy, guitar

Junior Wells and Buddy Guy were a terrific match. This album is nothing short of great. I am so glad I bought this. You will tap your foot, all while having a smile on your face. Dynamic, wide, fun, and it all sounds right. Well done, AP.

Get this for the music. The little sound bites you can click on don’t do this justice. The feel of this recording is one of cohesiveness. You hear the band. It translates from the club to the studio to your living room. Rare. Just the right amount of rehearsal but also the rawness and honesty of the Blues. The recording is good. This isn’t perfect sound from a pure audiophile perspective — how could it be? It’s the Blues. The vinyl is quiet, plenty of fidelity, you can play follow the instrument if you want. But above all, it is the Blues, a rare taste of a moment of true art.

The records I got both looked perfect - not one flaw on either record. Very quiet pressing, and I only heard 2 pops (one light, one medium) and, other than that, a light click here and there. So there is essentially no surface noise.

I have this release from the Delmark company and it was noisy as can be, and that was when it was brand new. Additionally, that version has nowhere near the room presence of this AP release. The recording is absolutely beautiful and throughout, Junior Wells and his harmonica are dead center, Buddy Guy is on electric guitar on the right, the drummer is on the left, and back in the left is the bass player. Junior Wells sings too close to the mic but not annoyingly so. The instruments sound perfect. I can't emphasize too much the presence. Junior Wells and Buddy Guy are right in the room with you; and when everybody is jamming, it is sublime. You can hear every note that Buddy plays, if you can keep up with him.

Wow, this release

A raw, energetic display of what the Chicago Blues was all about! Wells' prowess as a blues shouter par-excellence and on the harmonica is laid bare on this stellar album, for all to feel and hear. Wells is accompanied by Buddy Guy's tasteful licks on the guitar, Jack Myers' pulsating bass rhythm and Billy Warren keeping faithful time on the skins. The chemistry-in-blues between Wells and Guy is palpable. This is a superior studio recording, but with the very real feel of a live show, minus the audience's applause. A++ MUST HAVE IN YOUR BLUES COLLECTION!

Love this album! The 45 RPM works beautifully with Hoodoo man blues and delivers a wide sound stage and gorgeous bass that just rolls off my walls. I waited for this to be repressed and super glad I got one before it sells out again (which I'm sure it will).

Thank You Bob Koester & ARP!

Every time you are in Chicago you should go by Bob Koester’s store and thank him for the Denmark catalog and what he did for us. I do it every time.

And we need to thanks Acoustic Records Pressings for this release. One of the best, certainly top five, urban Chicago Blues recordings of its era. And it sounds like I am sitting in the best blues venue in Chicago, without the bartenders and noisy crowds.

Junior is at his best, but what blows me away is the playing of Buddy Guy. None of the guitar slinger stuff of today, but straight blues.

if you own this LP/CD but haven’t heard this version. You owe it to yourself to pick it up. It is rebirth of everything great Chicago Blues!

A must have for blues collections

For fans of Chicago/electric blues you can't get more to the base and core of this genre than the great Junior Wells, with a young Buddy Guy tastefully filling in as backup guitar. And, considering the methodology of the time this pressing seems to start with a pretty good master. With that as a base it then gets the Acoustech/Analogue Productions treatment, really bringing it to life. The resulting sound has a lot of presence to it. For blues lovers this is an archive quality issue.

Best Blues album EVER!!

Hoodoo Man Blues is the 1965 debut album of blues vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells, performing with the Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band, an early collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Buddy Guy.

Without question, the original release in 1965 is one of the best blues LPs of all time. The quality of this 45 RPM release by Analogue Productions far surpasses the original release and any subsequent releases. On a 1-10 scale I grade the sound as 10; music as 10; vinyl quality as 10; press quality as 10; and sleeve quality as 7. The sleeve quality is the only weakness I could find! The overall quality (my opinion) is an astonishing 9.4! Yes, $50 is a lot of money for and LP, but a guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
