While still maintaining the aquatic attitude of the first volume, Episodes in Oceanography, Vol. 2 provides a more bold and daring tone. Differing from other openers of ambient electronic artist Chypho’s works, “The HMS Challenger Expedition” kicks off this album with a grand start. However, this track is not too dissimilar to the opening of Entomongaku, with its motor-like motif driving the music forward. The album closes with the immersive and atmospheric track, “Through the Hydrophone”. This eight-and-a-half-minute piece provides little in terms of melodic content, yet encapsulates a true sense of the cold and quiet depths. The spirit of adventure and exploration in this installment couples nicely with the first’s more gentle and observational nature, proving them to be sister albums — though they are not exactly twins.

Episodes in Oceanography, Vol. 2 is the fourth title of the Chypho LPs released by Jahbulon Records.  The beautiful cover art, coupled with the sleek obi and gold-foil stamped numbers, make these a great addition to your collection.
