"The Blues and the Abstract Truth is one of my favorite jazz recordings. What a group of heavy-weight performers! Besides Oliver Nelson on tenor sax, you've got the incomparable Bill Evans on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Paul Chambers on bass, Roy Haynes on drums, and Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax. This is the jazz equivalent of a super-group." — Jim Hannon, AVguide.com

As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues And The Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic "Stolen Moments," but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to for an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section.

Originally released in 1961.

Let me preface this by saying I consider myself an “experienced” audiophile, whatever that means:). I’m also well accustomed to master tapes from various genres and sources, including the tape project, Delmark, IPI, “Ebay masters” etc. I know what good music sounds like and what digitized shit recorded to tape sounds like too (unfortunately… we all learn along the way).

I’d only heard the 45 RPM version from the impulse reissues; which along with most Impulse titles were well done and allowed me to really experience the album as a late bloomer to Oliver Nelson. I honestly didn’t know what to expect, and I’d doubted I’d ever hear any vendor put the time and care into a product on the same level as TPP.

Well. It’s the best I’ve heard, period. fullness / imaging / dynamics, no compromise sound. They truly wring every nuance from the 3T master.

Packaging is best I’ve seen for any product, just gorgeous with a “master tape style” info sheet.

Fantastically open, effortlessly solid and 'real'. The vinyl is great, but this is another level. It's a real treat listening to these tapes. Thank you Chad for putting these titles out. With the cost of quality second hand vinyl approaching the cost of new tape now, I really hope this medium looks more and more viable to a wider demographic. Really looking forward to the next installment.

Superb music, superlative medium

Wow, the order arrived today and upon opening the box I have to say that all my lofty expectations have been surpassed by a most thoughtful and considerate packaging. Great attitude and effort by the good folks at Acoustic Sounds. Then the tapes are threaded carefully and the music exude that fantastic, true, limitless sound that is the last stop to audiophile Nirvana. Highly recommended to all audiophiles and jazz lovers.
