New solo album by Steely Dan co-founder, his first in half a decade

"For 40 years, with and without Steely Dan, Donald Fagen has delivered a lithe, urbane, instantly recognizable hybrid of rock, jazz and funk. ... If Sunken Condos offers few surprises, it assures us that some musicians can grow older without losing either their groove or their dignity." — USA Today, October 2012

"For Donald Fagen fans, it's an early Christmas. He's back with a new solo album, a mere half-decade after the last one. Sunken Condos is everything fans expect from the Steely Dan co-founder, keyboard mainstay and lead vocalist: Wry humor, a look at relationships, a sense of unease and superb sound, with playing by a crack set of players. It dovetails with the Dan's R&B-laced post-reunion sound, even if partner Walter Becker sat this one out." — MSN Music

Sunken Condos is Fagen's fourth solo album for Reprise Records. It begins a new chapter in the creative evolution of this innovative artist, whose career is still going strong after 40 years.

The nine tracks on the record were co-produced by Fagen and Michael Leonhart, who plays trumpet with the current touring edition of Steely Dan, and it's clear, says reviewer Mark Brown, that they had a blast. All but one track, an Ashkenazi recasting of Isaac Hayes' "Out of the Ghetto," are new Fagen originals. Some familiar names from the Steely Dan family of players are on hand (Jon Herington, he Steely Dan horns, Freddie Washington) plus some new faces. The word is that, from now on, everything Donald does has got to be funky.

This is one of the quietest, best sounding albums that I own. What a great pressing. And, the "coolness factor" is off the charts! The clear vinyl is awesome.

As a life-long Steely Dan fan, I have to admit, I didn't love the music upon first listen, but it has really grown on me. Great album.

Though I liked it on the first spin, this latest project from the musician's musician is not unlike his other 3 solo records. It grows on you with each listen. Fagen is masterful at funky riffs (particularly funky this time) that continue to reveal additional layers. There is more relationship / attraction content than most of his previous work; but the sound is as stellar as one would expect from the co-founder of Steely Dan. My pressing is dead quiet. When you put it on your turntable, check out the pattern of the pressing as it spins around.......really cool.
