Kind Of Blue: 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition ~ Francis Davis, album notes writer (Miles Davis)

Deluxe 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition

Talk about a Collector's Edition. This one's got it all. First, a CD of the original album, remastered with bonus tracks. Next, another CD of the first live session performed by the group (May 26, 1958), plus The Den Haag Concert and The Zurich Concert (over 60 minutes of music). Then, a DVD featuring an expanded Making Of Kind Of Blue documentary, as well as the historic television program The Sound Of Miles Davis, filmed in 1959. And finally, a premium, 180-gram BLUE vinyl companion record. Plus, a hardcover book with additional memorabilia.

Originally recorded in 1959, Kind Of Blue is widely regarded as the definitive jazz album, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. It is also the best-selling jazz album of all time. Representing the pinnacle of modal jazz, Miles Davis brought together John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb and assembled one of the greatest bands in history, spontaneously inventing a new musical style and language in the process.

This release comes in conjunction with a major Miles Davis biopic theatrical release scheduled for 2009, starring Academy Award winner Don Cheadle as Miles Davis.

Not a review of Miles' album (so much has been said already about this landmark work), but a review of the delivery service from Acoustic Sounds - which was exemplary.

When buying one of these commemoratives online, one is always worried about damage during shipping. Well, an Acoustic Sounds customer need not worry one little bit. You could probably throw the package out a third floor window and have zero damage to your record(s). Short of a fire on the delivery truck, there's no need to worry about anything happening to your order.

Well done, Acoustic Sounds!

I was a bit concerned having read various reviews about this pressing but I can only speak for myself and I am nothing short of delighted not only of the sound from the vinyl, even on my entry level ProJect turntable and KEF speakers. Not only that but the overall package is extremely well done and is of the highest quality ( I am more often found nose deep in photography books). Great job and a great sale price - thank you

I have no idea who was involved in the production of this version of kind of blue but suffice it to say the results were less than pleasing to me. Side B of this record plays decent enough; however, side A on my copy has a noticeable pop that stays with you for at least the first half of the 1st track "so what". Though I like the special packaging, I was not so thrilled with the problem I mentioned. may be it's just my copy. I compared this version to my copy of the standard Columbia Legacy reissue of this album and my standard copy won hands down. My one consolation is the packaging. Too bad I can't play the packaging.

Next time I purchase this album it will either be the Classic records 45rpm or the upcoming Mofi 45rpm

The album itself is excellent, very quiet with no surface noise to speak of. This collector box set is very nicely put together. The quality of the photos, the hard cover book, and poster is very nice. The supplied cd's are an issue as they did not want to load into my computer (reading error) Other than that, this set is well worth the money!
