This important composition, written between 1911 and 1913 by Igor Stravinsky, was based upon a vision he had while writing another piece: “I saw in imagination a solemn pagan rite: wise elders, seated in a circle, watching a young girl dancing herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of spring.” The first performance of this work at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris provoked one of the most famous riots in musical history. This performance of the Rite of Spring was made in Chicago’s Medinah during three sessions on May 14, 1974. Conducted by the world renowned Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony, this recording captures the mood and essence that Stravinsky originally intended.

2. Stravinsky: Part 2: The Sacrifice (Le Sacre du Printemps)

This recording was made by London/Decca Records in 1974. Having had a copy of the original LP since that time (and hearing the one and only CD reissue from London in the 80s, which sounded terrible) I must say this XRCD not only brings out what was missing in the previous CD issue, it also clarifies passages unheard in the original LP. There are many fine recordings of this 20th Century masterpiece. But if you like your "Sacre" exciting, in-your-face and stunning, this should fill the bill!
