"Heart is our hometown band-made-good, the older kids from the Pacific Northwest who showed us where we could go if we wrote songs, made records and toured hard." — Pearl Jam
The first album of new music from Ann and Nancy Wilson since 2010's Red Velvet Car, Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink at the helm. The Wilson sisters drew from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for the music on their new album.
"Dear Old America" comes from memories of a military household and is written from the point of view of their father, a Marine Corps officer, returning from war ('When I get home, I'm going to own own this town/Shine this medal/Wear that crown ...'). "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love. The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth and the belief that they can do anything together that they set their minds to.
At this point in their almost 40-year music career, it would be understandable for the Wilson sisters of the Seatle band Heart to want to take a break from recording and touring and appreciate what they've accomplished. But they've barely slowed down. Fanatic follows their just-published memoir: "Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll." The book, published by Harper Collins, debuted in September.
Their new memoir, co-written with Charles R. Cross, touches on the personal: their early lives growing up as part of a military family; their romances and breakups with some of the men associated with the band back in the '70s; and Ann's battle with her weight that had originated as far back as her childhood.
Heart, whose roots began in Vancouver in the early '70s, were rock superstars by the middle of that decade, beginning with the debut album Dreamboat Annie, subsequent records such as Little Queen, Dog and Butterfly and Bebe Le Strange, also went platinum. The duo have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
