As a pianist, composer and bandleader, Horace Silver practically originated and certainly was the symbol of funky jazz. His playing looked beyond Bud Powell to church music, the blues and his Cape Verde musical heritage. Silver's songs were catchy, soulful and consistently stuck in one's memory. And his bands, featuring a trumpet and tenor front line, always had a sound that was definitive of hard bop. But even with Silver's string of brilliant recordings for Blue Note, Song For My Father stands apart from the rest. The title cut became a much-covered standard as soon as this record was released, Joe Henderson's "The Kicker" also caught on, and every selection (including Silver's passionate ballad "Lonely Woman") is filled with Horace Silver's charm, wit and soul. No music collection is complete without this jazz classic.

Music Matters is consistently excellent. This classic is no exception. Excellent remastering, clean pressing and beautiful cover art. Attention to detail like this should be rewarded with our support.

Good things first. The music is fabulous, the tunes are great, the band is playing wonderfully and as allways Musicmatters cover jacket is beautyfull. Unfortunately the sound is not as good as on previous Musicmatters releases.Sure the dynamics, especially on the drums, are stunning. Also the amount of details and great stereo image justifies the rather salty 50$ price. However my copy has some crackling and poppinng that i`m used to with Musicmatters. Also some distortion on piano high notes, espesially on Lonely Woman. I don`t know where the flaws come from.Is it in original recording, remastering,RTI or do i just have that one "bad" copy.Still it`s a pity.
