When Peter Frampton left Humble Pie, the band he co-founded, the group replaced him with fireball guitarist Clem Clemson. And Humble Pie grew a whole lot more raucous, more freewheeling and downright greasy. Smokin', the first album with Clemson, is unquestionably their greatest with Steve Marriott's soulful wail totally unleashed. Smokin' yielded the group's most memorable anthem - "30 Days In The Hole."

SACD vs Jap SHM-CD

I also own "Smokin" on Japanese import utilizing the "SHM" (Super High Material) method of encoding, a process that improves the CD players ability to read the digital info with reduced error & improved clarity. SHM-CD's will play on any CD player & this title featured 2010 remastering. The SACD version & the SHM-CD were basically identical in sound quality, with the Jap import perhaps a tad 'brighter' in the high frequency. I say "perhaps" because any difference was indeed subtle (my system is quite transparent), requiring several A-B direct comparisons to detect any difference at all. As the Japanese SHM-CD costs nearly as much as this SACD (not including shipping), I would advise digital audiophiles to get the SACD. Note: the Jap import is a "mini-LP sleeve"- so if you collect those (or if you hate jewel cases as much as I do)then the added cost may be worth it. Both sound about as good as "Smokin" on digital can (this title is 38 years old), but this is not a 'demo' SACD.
