Dire Straits - Dire Straits

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Pressed at Pallas in Germany on 180-gram vinyl.

Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and distinctive vocals mark their self-titled debut album of bluesy tunes that even on first listen, sound as if you've just wandered into a local pub to hear a great rock band over a beer. Thanks to the Top 10 hit "Sultans of Swing," Dire Straits was a major success in both Britain and America, with the single and album climbing into the Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic.

On the strength of how pleased I was with the treatment given by Bernie Grundman and Pallas on "Love over Gold" I acquired three additional Grundman/Pallas joint ventures - the self titled "Dire Straits/Dire Straits", "Making Movies", and "Communique". Within the range of the differences of the musicality of the different albums all are fabulously presented by Mr. Grundman and Pallas. Dynamic sonics, great soundstage and effective placement - consistently done with respect to all four albums. If you like Dire Straits, then these four albums are great executions of each - and deliver the music in a way that seems to offer little or no room for improvement. Great pressings.

It's Dire Strats first and best album, so it really is a no-brainer. The pressing is nearly flawless. Not the most quiet vinyl I own, but really close. Midrange blows away the cd (crappy disc) I have. It's a Must own!

I do not have the WBs original to compare this with, but it would have to be quite impressive to give this reissue a serious run for the money. The vinyl is very quiet, and the sonics are dynamic, detailed, and very natural and engaging. The dimensions of the soundfield, which is not just very wide, but deep as well, with true "air" and sense of space, renders the CD "shallow" and sterile in comparison. I know...what a shock. Analog IS music (should I copyright that?).

Dead quiet vinyl. Sound is very good overall with a touch too much bass. Very pleasurable to listen to. So many re-makes are not mastered correctly. This one is fine, however I have to give 5 stars to my original 1978 WB. It was engineered by Rhett Davies and it is absolutely perfect. Don't have a good copy of the original then get this re-make? It's almost as good.
