According to legend, Sly's disillusionment with progress in the Civil Rights movement, coupled with personal problems, led to a two-year delay before Riot appeared in 1971. What's evident in the grooves is that the Family Stone's sound got darker and even funkier. "Family Affair" was a monstrous chart item.
