One of rock's true masterpieces, this stunning sophomore effort was released in September 1970 to unanimous accolades and went No. One on the Billboard Pop Album chart. Utilizing the studio more in overall production than on their debut (especially in mixing and using cross-fades) the band and producer Fred Catero (Janis Joplin, BS&T, Chicago) still maintained the street energy and ethnic roots, while elevating Carlos' guitar passages to god-like status; resulting in the pinnacle of their album output. Wicked re-worked arrangements of songs as dichotomatic as the connecting of Peter Green's "Black Magic Woman" with Gabor Szabo's "Gypsy Woman" in medley, followed directly in sequence on side one with Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" was both brilliant and on-par with anything going down in music at the time, period.

I'm an SACD/DVD-A fan, but wanted to check out a Mofi disc after hearing some great things about them. Let me just say I was blown away when the first track started! I could not believe the space and clarity of sound coming from only two channels. I'm certainly hooked on these Mofi discs now!

Enough has been said about the music on this album. It is a classic and anything I say will be redundant. Suffice it to say that it is timeless and works as well today as when it was first released. Soundwise, in a comparison of this disc with the first MFSL gold CD release of this album, from some years ago, it became immediately apparent that on the current release the bass is noticeably leaner but the overall sound is definitely cleaner, making inner detail more noticeable. This is a clear advantage, considering the number of players in the group. The earlier release, while quite good for its day, sounds just a touch "smoother" than the present one. Overall, despite the lean bass, this is the best-sounding incarnation of "Abraxas" I have heard (in all fairness, however, I have not heard any recent vinyl pressings).
