A King, Riding is based on the 1931 novel The Waves by the English author Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). In her book Woolf explores the complexity of the human experience, using as her medium the protracted inner monologues of six protagonists. Their monologues are interwoven in a sort of literary counterpoint and reflect common themes: reflections on their childhood, a gathering in London. But most of all these musings focus on a seventh, unseen, character: their mutually adored childhood friend Percival and his sudden death.
